Smiths Sale
Did you see the incredible sales at Smith's?
I bought Swiss miss hot cocoa (box of 10 pkgs) for $.50, quaker rice cake snacks (for kids lunches) for $.50, Poweraid, and carnation evaporated milk for $.50 a can, too. You have to purchase any 10 items (you can mix and match) and then it takes $5 off your bill. There are tons of other products, too ranging in price from $.50 to $2.50 (that's the price after you purchase 10 and they take the $5 off).
Also, back in the reduced cart section (between the produce and back frozen wall) there were a ton of Ziploc brand snack size bags. The boxes have 50 bags and are marked down to $1.49. I bought two and used my coupon from Sunday's paper (save $1.00 two) so they were actually just $1.00 a box.
Hope that is helpful. I also noticed the extra lean ground beef is just $1.99 per pound.

Smiths honors competitor coupons!
I was reading past blog entries to your Sale, Sale, Sale blog ( I thought I had it listed on my reader and realized that I did not--shame on me!). I wanted to also mention that Smith's will also honor coupons from other stores as long as they are a coupon. I usually clip the Freddy's coupons on Sunday and pick them up at Smith's that week to catch more sales items at Smith's either before the sale ends on Tuesday or when the new ads break on Wednesday.
Don't be afraid to think outside the box. If you don't want all the items to qualify for the discount but have to buy 10 for example, ask a friend to go in with you and qualify together. If you call her from the store and save her the gas to get there, you're saving more money for each other.
Bev
Great tip Bev!

Clearance sales at Sears
Hi, Michelle
I just wanted to let you know that I have a batman costume (size small, around 4-6) if anyone is interested since Halloween is coming up.
I also was just at Sears today and they have a big clearence going on off their summer things. I was able to get the boys some shorts for next summer for 4.99 and they were Levi brand. I also found dress pants for that price also. They had mens shorts and swim suits also on sale. They had a some racks marked for .99. Just thought I let you know. This is how I buy most of our clothes. Buy off seasons for the next year. Sears also has the Kid Advantage. If it wears out before they grow out of it they replace it for free. I had bought a coat for Zach last year and the zipper broke on it and I took it in today and no questions asked replaced it for free. I do this with their shoes also. Last year alone I had to replace their shoes a couple of times and it saves money. Which we want to do.

Sunday coupons
If anyone gets the Sunday paper and doesn't use the coupons, let me know. Myself and others have been trying to save and use coupons from the Sunday paper (ie. redplum, smart source, proctor gamble). I would be happy to make arrangements for pick up.
Thank you so much for your help in our efforts!

It really does work!
Today I went shopping at Albertsons. I bought 3 containers of strawberries, 2 arisol whipped cream and 6 tubes of Crest for $6.88! Everything was on sale, I had coupons for the toothpaste, so I got those FREE!! I was totally stoked. I have never used coupons in combo with store ads, so I was leary, but it worked!

Hello Hello!
First of all, I have to laugh. Amongst my friends, there are 3 that always cause me trouble when talking about them: Tammy, Cami, and Tandy. Just say all three names fast. Knowing that I could be talking about any one of them at any time (YES, ALL GOOD!) then you can see the confusion that my family feels. (Anne, I did talk with you about this too, but your name doesn't fit into the above story as well, sorry.)
A couple of weeks ago I took my friend Tammy shopping. I showed her where all the ads were, pointed out good deals, and showed her the clearance sections. She called on Wednesday and said that there was a really good show on Oprah about shopping sales. I was very excited. I have see the shows on budgeting and others, and loved the tips. Unfortunatly I did not get to see much of it.
The next day I was talking to my friend Tandy. I was telling her that I was heading over to Bev Jones to get some corn stalks for decoration **See my other website if you are interested** and she wanted to get some too. We were talking about how expensive everything is getting, and she said she had the show recorded. When we were finished we went to her home and watched Oprah. I will eventually add links, but I did want to write a small recap. BTW Thanks Tami and Tandy!!
The Dow has been falling sharply. The problem is that Americans have borrowed more money than they can afford to pay. This should be considered THE wake up call. Pay attention to your debt and BE RESPONSIBLE!!
Finacially, we have tapped out the limit of the country. (We know that this is true due to all the government bail outs!) He said that the stock market is not a preminition of the future, but is a reflection of the Fear that Americans are feeling from their credit limits.
**I was watching Dr. Phil earlier in the week talking about this problem. He said that ANY time we make a purchase at the store without the ability to pay for it WE ARE STEALING. We have given items on the agreement that we will pay for them. If we take items, and then are unable to pay for them it is stealing, and a chain reaction occurs leaving many people hurting, and eventually jobless. Looking at things this way is very sobering.**
Anywho, This guy said that the steps the government is taking will work. It will take a while, but the markets will rebound. (Don't freak and pull your money out. You don't make money in the market by selling high and buying low!)
We need to get our priorities strait! The way we do this is by understanding the problem. The problem is that we have borrowed more than we can afford to pay, and now are unable to pay the bills! First off:
1--Stop borrowing money!
2--Realize that when companies seek you out to lend money to you it is only because the stand to make a lot of money off of you.
Then:
We need to start getting creative!
When redecorating, some friends chose to swap furniture! (saving over $2,000)
Unplug anything not in use, to save power. When plugged into the wall, it will still draw energy, even while off.
Get creative with vacations. Try a "staycation." Do fun activities at home.
Use cash. Take your allowed budget for items. Use cash from the envelopes, and when it is gone, it is gone!
Bring a calculator with you to the store.
Exchange services, swap or barter. A dance instructor offered lessons in exchange for meals at a students family resteraunt.
Give homemade gifts
Cutting back often leads to a richer life. Set goals, then outline priorities. Look at these choices as an alternative to living beyond your means. With your smart choices, you will avoid the stress and guilt of living beyond your means. You can make this a family goal, and take satisfaction in the success. Take advantage of your local rescourses. Instead of buying or renting DVDs, check it out at the local library. Go for bike rides, walks, and picnics in your area.
The next tips were geared toward shopping. Base your weekly menu on what is on sale. NEVER pay full price! This is a necessary wake up call. We need to shift our thinking!
Keep all your reciepts in a basket. Get a journal, and evaluate EACH purchase. Itemize if it was a need or a want. Record how each purchase makes you FEEL. This will help you become more aware as you purchase items.
Pack lunches.
On occasion, when you do eat out, look for specials, coupons, and offers where kids eat free.
Research phone, internet, and cell options, for the best options for your household.
Pay more than your minimum payments.
Safeguard the things that are important to you: Family, Food, Roof over your head. Use this to guide your choices.
couponmom.com is a neat website. (I put a link off to the right of the screen.) By using coupons and store membership cards, she was able to save 70%. She had tips so you can develop an efficient system of using store ads, coupons, and sales. 30 minutes of prepwork eachweek can save you hundreds of dollars a month.
Keep a supply of beef, chicken and pork. NEVER pay full price!
Find stores that double coupon.
See how the stores buy 1 get 1 free deals work. Do you have to buy 2 items, or are they really half price?
Keep the store promo and sale coupons.
Buy 2 -3 Sunday newspapers for the coupons. Have an efficient system for saving them. You don't even have to cut all of them. Just the ones you want for each week. **many of the websites have suggestions of how to organize your coupons and when to use them** Savvy shopper is a great site to tell you what coupons to use with what sales.
You can also print coupons from the internet. (I have to admit I have not done this yet--too chicken and uneducated!:))
There are even electronic coupons that you can add to your store rewards cards, so you won't even have to deal with an actual coupon!
Please Please Please! If you have additional tips or suggestions, let me know. You can leave a comment, and when I moderate it, I will post it for everyone!
Don't forget my other website: Excess Exchange. Already many people have benefited from it. I think it will continue to be a blessing as we are able to help eachother!
Love ya all! Michelle

Albertsons accepts competitor coupons!
Hi, I am Lisa. I'm a friend of Gina's and found the link to your blog when I was reading her blog. Anyway, I thought you might be interested to know that Albertson's accepts competitor coupons. I work there, so that's how I'm familiar with the program, I'm not sure it's advertised very much. They don't do price matching, but they will accept a coupon from any competitor. I noticed you posted the sale on milk with coupons at Freddy's. I'm assuming the sale is on Freddy's brand. You could use the coupon at Albertson's on their store brand. So if you're going to Albertsons for other items, this might save you a stop somewhere else. Well, hopefully that will help somebody. Thanks.
Thanks for the info Lisa! It would be great to do a little more "one stop shopping!"--Michelle

Reasons to be prepared!
Okay, so you all know that I have been totally freaking out about food storage lately. The following is an e-mail my friend Cami Ellis forwarded to me. It was friend of a friend who is living in Texas dealing with hurricane Ike.
Dear Friends:
Just to let you know that we are doing well. We have a 6'x6'hole in our roof, no electricity or running water, Trees downeverywhere. However, because we listened to the counsel of our Prophet we are prepared. In fact it seems to me that it's only the members ofthe church who seem to be calm, prepared, and helping one another withtrees in roofs, flooding, etc. There is a POD or Point of Distribution in Tomball where we live. Thereyou get water and ice IF you have enough fuel to wait in the 3 hourlines. We don't have to do that because we have 3 full water barrels, 75juice bottles filled with water, and our pool which is dirty but we useit to flush. It is very difficult to get gas. Police guard the stations when fuel isdelivered and you might wait half a day to get up to the pump just tohave them say, "Too bad, we are out".I am grateful that we have a generator. We run it 4 hours a day to keepour fridge and light. I am grateful that we have had fuel for it. Youcan't even buy gas containers as they are rationed. We can only buy breadonce a week and are limited to 2 loaves at a time. Water is rationed by thecase at the grocery store. 3 cases per family. The ATM machines do not have power. For the past 6 months I have stashed small bills away because I have had such a feeling of foreboding. Wehave cash because of that. LISTEN TO THE SPIRIT. Get cash in small billsbecause the stores can't make change and credit and debit cards oftendon't work. I had to pay 5 dollars more for an item because theycouldn't make change for me. PHONES ONLY WORK OCCASIONALLY.Believe it or not...I have not had a bath in 4 days, Today was the firstday I got to wash my hair with pool water. I haven't fixed my hair in aweek!!! It just doesn't matter anymore. We can not do laundry becausewe don't have water. So, we wear our clothes until they are literallydisgusting. When we do finally get water we will have to boil it since itis contaminated. I am grateful for my parents. When we got low on generator fuel theydrove 45 minutes to help us. They filled up their cans and brought us 10gallons of fuel which kept us going until this morning at 6:00 am whenwe finally found some gas.A prepared Family and a loving extended family is the key to survival andmaking it through right now. I know that my parents would drive to theend of the earth to help me and it's nice knowing they are there. I knowthat I would do the same for my children. I want all of you to know that I have such a testimony of following thecounsel of our living prophet. There really is safety and peace in yourheart if you are prepared. Please get your generators, 5 gas cans fullof gas, canned goods, baby items, baby wipes to bathe, and all thewater you can store...even if you have to trip on it in your home. Haveyour lanterns, crank flashlights, tarps, rope, etc.. ready to go becauseyou never know when it will be your turn to endure the test. It'soverwhelming, but it's going to be ok eventually. I have a home, I havefood, I have water, because I listened to the counsel of the prophet. Please make sure you do the same. It's time to have your life in order. Tomorrow may be too late.
I know that if we are prepared, we have nothing to fear. I am so greatful to be a member of the church and have a living prophet of God. We have been warned to be prepared (not freak out like me) and I know that we will be blessed from our obedience. I loved the tip about water and money in small bills. Thanks for all the motivation and gentle reminders !

My cousin shared this site with me. It is AWESOME! A great way to know about the deals. It also encourages you to look for the coupons found in your newspapers. It is free to register. Enjoy!

I'm so excited!
This year has been a real change for me. The kids are in school quite a bit of the day. Now I can put a little more focus on my homemaking skills. I have been wanting to make a little better choices on my purchases. I will include these links, and highlight my favorite purchases. Keep in mind, I am not a pro, this has just become a hobby!
I love to buy my meat at Bilo. In my humble opinion, they have the best meat in town, and often have great deals!
I buy my milk at common cents. It is Cream of Weber, costs 2.49 and you can get a punch card where you buy 11, get the 12th one free!
I love to shop at Shopko. Shopko always has the best clearance deals!
I always do the bulk of my food shopping at Winco. I have found it to be the cheapest for groceries. They also have wonderful produce!
JC Penney and Sears have great end of the season clearances. Penneys also seems to always be having a sale of some sort.
Walmart is not my favorite store! I find way too much to buy, it is way too busy, and it takes forever to get out of the store--and yes, most of these reasons are my fault.
So those are my "everyday" shopping habbits. But, I have to say that while I do not do my "everyday" shopping at Albertsons, Smiths or Ridleys, these are to stores that I do my "stock up" shopping at. Last week I bought boxes of cereal and quacker granola bars for $1!!! These are my extremly fun deals!
FYI--Ridleys case lot sale is starting in just over a week on September 30th!
I love to buy my meat at Bilo. In my humble opinion, they have the best meat in town, and often have great deals!
I buy my milk at common cents. It is Cream of Weber, costs 2.49 and you can get a punch card where you buy 11, get the 12th one free!
